Up and Down the Aisles: National Restaurant Association 2008 Convention

By Warren Katz

Organic tea, sugar-free oatmeal, orange soda, and President George W. Bush.  What all of these have in common is that they are kosher and were featured at the National Restaurant Association’s 2006 tradeshow.  Well, depending on your political affiliation, you may or may not think that President Bush is kosher.  He was, however, at this year’s convention showing his support for the restaurant industry, signaling its importance to the American public.  He seems to have caught on to something that kosher eaters have known for centuries: food matters.

The president, though, is not the only one who has picked up a thing or two lately.  Companies specializing in everything from soup to nuts, literally, now proudly display the symbols on their products indicating that they are kosher while even a decade ago many at the show did not even know what the word kosher meant.  Today, a kosher eater could roam up and down the aisles of the NRA show and find thousands of non-ethnic items available to him or her.  What this means for you is that the next time you go to the supermarket, you do not have to stay in the kosher section.  Whether you want chips, cookies, coffee, or a salad, there are more choices out there for you than ever before.

Summer Fun Foods

Some of the most promising sectors are snacks and desserts, which is good with summer entertaining just around the corner.

JavaJuice® takes pure, organic, high-class coffee to new levels of convenience with their potent packets of liquid coffee concentrate. A pure coffee extract, Java Juice is made from 100% premium, organic coffee beans and triple-filtered water, nothing else. No additives or preservatives. Java Juice is a pioneer, a coffee product designed for hundreds of different uses. Use it at home, on the road, for cooking, camping, even for making the house coffee go bionic. Move over Bucky, your star is about to see lights. JavaJuice, coffee for a new generation. Rip it. Drip it. Sip it. Of course it's kosher.

Jones Soda Co. which you have probably seen at Starbucks, produces flavored soda in such different varieties as strawberry-lime and watermelon.

Baffles is one of the most cerebral of snack foods. With only 60 calories per serving, it is really a "no brainer." These crunchy clusters are baked, not fried, are low fat, and cross all the barriers for sensational taste. One interesting aspect of the Baffles line of snacks is that there are both sweet and savory flavors: barbeque, cheddar, caramel, chocolate, cinnamon...a flavor for any occasion. These unique snacks are all natural, taste great, and are Kosher certified!

Upscale and natural, Numi’s selection offers Black Iced Teas (High Mountain Black Ice, Tropical Breeze, Bergamot Black); Green Iced Teas (Cool Jasmine Ice, Mate Lemon Green, Cool Mintea Green); or caffeine free Herbal Iced Teasans (Berried Treasures, Lime Oasis, Lemon Honeychill, Red African Ice).  Bergamot Black recently won Best Commercial Brew and Best Black Tea at the World Tea Expo. for a piece of creamy cheesecake.  You can also order such treats as triple chocolate truffle cheesecake on-line.

 Super Salads

For those of you who are looking to eat healthier foods now that bathing-suit season is back, there is good news.  Many labels are showing that a salad can be just as kosher as matzo ball soup.

Boskovich Farms, Inc.  produces a line of packaged lettuce that is a great match for Conway Dressing for Salad  The latter has been in business for over 100 years, and has fat free, low fat, and carb free varieties.

To make that salad even better, you can add avocado courtesy of Calavo Growers Inc.

 ...and Vegan

Vegetarians should try the flavored flatbreads made by Kontos Foods Inc.

You can travel the globe with its 100% vegetarian products, which include olive bread, onion nan, southwestern flatbread, and pita. A personal favorite of this writer is Peace Cereal, a label that not only offers healthier products but also a better future for the world it is feeding.  It donates 10% of its profits to organizations working towards building peace around the globe, including Bustan L’Shalom, which aims to bridge the divide between Jews and Arabs.  Peace Cereal and Yogi Tea, labels owned by the parent company Golden Temple Products, are available at Whole Foods stores.

468x60 Jucier

Walking up and down the aisles of this year’s National Restaurant Association’s convention, I was able to sample delicious kosher foods. The companies and products mentioned above are samples for you of the many companies and products that are now members of the kosher food community. Next time you are in your local supermarket, take a walk up and down the aisles and check them out.
